Kept in the glovebox, handed on with the keys

Odometer Pages

Every secondhand car arrives with something in the glovebox. Sometimes it is a pile of napkins. Now and then it is a small notebook, and that is the one worth reading.

On a used car lot you learn to open the glovebox before you open the hood. A few previous owners leave behind a spiral pad, its corners soft, with the date of each oil change, the name of the mechanic who fixed the window, the morning the battery gave up in the cold. Nobody asked them to write it. They wrote it because a car is easier to look after when its story is on paper and not only in somebody's head.

We sell secondhand cars and take others on consignment in Florianópolis, in the south of Brazil. These pages come in English, meant for American households where somebody is on the far side of fifty and would like a clear head and an orderly week. The idea is simple: the habits that make a glovebox notebook useful to a car are the same habits that make a week easier to remember. None of it is a doctor's advice, and the office page at the back says plainly how the site is paid for.
